Hive on Owen's face

Yesterday during small group, Owen got some hives, redness, and itching on his face. There was 5 kids and 1 babysitter in the basement at my house. There was no food. Owen started itching his face. I went to check on him, and I saw some hives on his face. I gave him benadryl, and the itching and hives went away in 20 minutes.

Hi Joanna,

I've just been reading your blog and feeling your pain. Our two year old, Nathaniel, has had eczema and food allergies since he was 6 weeks old. It is an exhausting battle and one that so few people comprehend. Nathaniel also had his RAST test with increases in most of his numbers (milk, egg, sesame, chickpea etc...) although his tree nuts came back negative which was completely baffling.

You had a posting awhile back about thinking that Owen might be allergic to dogs. We were so confused because Nathaniel had been around dogs and cats with no issue and then my brother brought his hypoallergenic dog over at Christmas time and Nathaniel got huge hives. My first reaction was, "great my kid is allergic to a non-allergenic dog." My brother then told me he had just given the dog a bath before he came over. We think that he was allergic to the shampoo and not the dog because he hasn't had a problem since then.

Anyway, I hope you keep up your blog. It makes me feel less alone and a bit more hopeful.

Thank you for your sharing your story. It helps to know that we are not alone.

I think that Owen is allergic to dog saliva, and not the actual dog. There have been times that Owen has been licked by a dog and got hives. It may have been something the dog ate before licking him. But my nephew who does not have any food allergies also breaks into hives when certain dogs lick him.

Just some thoughts to make an already confusing situation more confusing. :)
